What's with people getting pregnant before marriage?

At a recent wedding shower... needless to say for a dude, my friend Chris told us about his proposal to his girlfriend who was three months pregnant. He proposed to her at a hot dog stand in Santa Barbara. When he asked her: "Will you marry me?" Being traditional and Catholic, she said: "Of course. I have to." I was cracking up when I heard that.

Lesson Learned: Use contraception.

Even where both parties use contraception, there is NEVER a guarantee. Question: what's the REAL difference between married folks and unwed parents? Answer: a state-issued piece of paper. Is it so absurd a notion that couples can't commit to each other, or that parents can't commit to the needs of their children without a state-issued license/order or religious convention hanging over their heads? Those things do not have the foremost ability to make you a better partner or a better parent - it's your genuine love, compassion, fortitude, self-discipline, drive, etc. that ultimately makes you a better partner and parent.

I just wonder why people feel the need to get married b/c they are having a baby. Yes, you should be committed to the child. But I don't think that marriage is the be all end all.

Would these people have gotten married if she weren't knocked up?
